A rooftop with clay tile shingles

So many different decisions go into the process of building or renovating a home. When you think about your roof, your thoughts probably stop right there. It’s just simply a roof. However, there are 15 different types of roof shingles for you to choose from! That seems like a lot of different types of shingles for a job as simple as covering your roof, but each different type has different qualities or aesthetics to perfectly fit your needs.

Asphalt shingles

This is one of the most common materials used for roofing. There are three different types of asphalt shingles. 3-tab shingles are incredibly inexpensive, and each single has three tabs, giving your roof a very textured look. Architectural shingles are another inexpensive option. These come in singular tabs, and when placed they are in an almost criss-crossed position. This gives your roof a 3D look that’s quite appealing. The last asphalt option is Hip and ridge. This option includes flat shingles for the actual roof, and then raised/rounded shingles for corners, creating ridges.

Slate shingles

Slate shingles are a gorgeous option, although it is a more expensive option than simple asphalt shingles. These shingles are made from a natural stone pulled from the earth, and will last you at least 50 years. The roof will be waterproof, fireproof, and incredibly durable.

Tile shingles

These shingles range second most popular on this list. They’re not as inexpensive as asphalt shingles, but they offer a lot of diverse looks. Ceramic tiles are relatively well known, as they’re often a recognizable red color. A few other tile shingle options that are absolutely gorgeous are metal tiles, concrete tiles, bituminous tiles, Polymer-Sand Tile roof, copper tile roof, and composite tiles.

Wooden shingles

If you’re looking for a rustic look for your home, wooden shingles is the way to go. These are appealing because they look and feel natural, as opposed to some of the other options. One of the biggest downsides to wooden shingles is that they’re not fireproof. The four main types of wood used in wooden shingles are pine, California redwood, Western red cedar, and Atlantic white cedar.

Metal roofing

Metal roofs now come in individual shingles, which has expanded your roofing options considerably. If well taken care of, a metal roof will last your upwards of 50 years. The most popular metal materials to choose from for roofing purposes are: steel, stainless steel, aluminum, copper, and zinc alloys.
