Vinyl is one of the more economical and durable siding options available. Though maintenance is usually minimal, it is important to keep your vinyl siding clean. Not only does this improve the curb appeal of your home, it protects the vinyl and keeps it in good shape for years to come. Here are a few tips to help you keep your siding clean:
Spray it down
In many cases restoring the vibrancy and appeal of your vinyl only requires taking a garden hose with a nozzle attachment and washing down the siding. For more challenging dirt and grime, you may want to use a pressure washer. Just be careful when using a pressure washer to avoid damaging your siding. Keep the pressure in the lower ranges and try to keep the stream moving, and avoid leaving it in one place for too long.
Apply a cleaning solution
Sometimes, if the dirt and grime are really stubborn, it helps to introduce a cleaning solution to your arsenal. Cleaning solutions are versatile and can be applied via a bucket and a soft bristled brush or can even be added to the water in a pressure washer. Rather than having to purchase one, you can mix your own solution using this simple list of ingredients:
-
1 gallon of water
-
â…“ cup laundry detergent
-
â…” cup TSP cleaner
After applying the solution, simply rinse it off and wipe the siding down. You’ll be rewarded with spotless, clean, and vibrant vinyl.
Dealing with mold
One of the problems with vinyl, though not so much in Utah’s dry climate, is mold. However, mold can be easily treated by adding about a quart of bleach to the cleaning solution. Once applied, allow the solution to remain on the vinyl for about 10 minutes. This should give the solution enough time to cut through the mold. The next step is simply rinsing off your siding and enjoying the cleanliness of your home.
Just be aware of the plant life near where you are applying the solution, as the bleach will kill anything it comes in contact with. Â You can cover your plants to prevent unwanted splashing. Also be absolutely certain to not mix bleach with anything that also contains ammonia as this will result in chlorine gas, which can be fatal.
Your vinyl is one of the first things people see of your house. We hope these tips help you keep your home beautiful and clean for years to come. If you have any questions or would like further advice, please contact us. We’d love to help.
